Christchurch: the city that doesn’t quit

When we first landed in New Zealand, we rented a car in Auckland, drove all around the North Island, took the ferry to the South Island, explored there, and eventually took the ferry back north. Throughout our travels, most of the locals told us to avoid Christchurch. The area has been ravaged by several earthquakes and the aftermath is heartbreaking. So many people warned us against it, it peaked our interest. We went, and we loved it. Yes, it was sad to see such destruction–but at the same time it felt inspiring. The Christchurchers have a real fight in them. The city is rebuilding, it is colorful and doused in creativity. I hope to return someday and see how far you’ve come.

There are quite a few Cuban themed restaurants and bars in NZ–I’m not sure why.

This is the ceiling and front window panel of the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch. It was designed by “disaster architect” Shigeru Ban after the earthquake in 2011 destroyed the original church. It’s constructed out of giant cardboard tubes and shipping containers.
