I grew up with a very different sneaker mentality than I have now.
I used to think you could never have enough.
But the days of the insatiable sneakerhead are limited.
Landfills and closets are too full.
Just like average annual temperatures, the tides of consumerism are changing.
I’m to blame.
How about you?
I want to own up to my part in feeding greedy the belly of the fashion industry without any thought of environmental impact.
The shakeup that was 2020 changed my outlook. Scrolling through instagram and reddit filled me with angst. My usual feed of abundant sneaker shelves and shoebox stacks saddled me with heaviness.
My once spacious apartment closed in on me. Angry, unworn shoes growled from their dusty perch. So I stopped buying so much, and it felt GREAT.
ARE SNEAKER COLLECTIONS WRONG? NO.
BUT REMEMEBER:
Having too many sneakers isn’t proof that you’re a sneakerhead.
MY COLLECTION IS ENOUGH AND IT SERVES AS A REMINDER OF MY ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT.
DOES THAT MEAN I’LL NEVER BUY SHOES AGAIN?
OF COURSE NOT.
BUT BEFORE BUYING:
Think about your needs.
Then wait a month.
IF THAT PRODUCT STILL MATTERS,
THEN MAYBE BUY IT.
IT’S TIME FOR HYPE CULTURE TO SUPPORT THE NEXT BIG THING:
Do what’s right for the planet.
NO DROP CAN COMPETE WITH EARTH.
SO NEXT TIME I HAVE THE ITCH FOR RETAIL THERAPY:
I’ll do something great >>>

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. In the US we’re constantly being encouraged to buy stuff. Most of us don’t think about how it’s made, the people who make it, or what happens to it when we throw it away. You can go crazy thinking about every purchase you make, but most of us could make some simple adjustments that would make a difference. As you say, we can try to avoid buying things on impulse. We can also try not to buy stuff that comes with excessive packaging. We really do need to change the way we live. It should be clear by now that the planet is in bad shape, and getting worse.
My thoughts exactly! If every made some small changes it would really add up.
I hope that the more we demand out of companies through our purchases (or lack there of) the more they’ll change, hopefully for the better.
