Near the small village of Vík í Mýrdal in southern Iceland is Reynisfjara, a beautiful black sand beach. Perhaps you recognize it from Game of Thrones. It’s the beach at the Eastwatch, where the men of the Night’s Watch are guarding the wall.
There is a cliff of basalt columns, large enough to climb. Atop that cliff are hundred and hundreds of puffins. They flutter their tiny wings and dive bomb into the waves, trying to catch a fresh meal. In the middle of those crashing waters are Reynisdrangar, basalt sea stacks, peaking their points tops out as if they’re waving hello.
This truly stunning area is only 2.5 hours from the city center of Reykjavík. It’s astounding to be swallowed up by the glory of nature that close to a major hub.
