Trips to the Art Institute always improve my day. Honestly, they improve much more than that. After visiting a museum, seeing new pieces and familiar works, those creations stick with you. It’s like the images are on instant replay in your mind, just like a good movie (or a bad one for that matter).
Recently I went to see the Christopher Wool exhibit at the Art Institute in Chicago. His work is shown in the last few photos above, excluding the imagery of St. George slaying the dragon that I threw in for good measure. Wool’s work is considered to be post-conceptual. What’s that? It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Similar to conceptual art, it builds on the notion that the idea behind the art is more important than the aesthetic nature of what is produced.
Wool is most known for his giant black and white stenciled pieces. Often time he paints or prints large words broken up by a grid with the vowels removed, quite prophetic seeing as how texting wasn’t around in the 1980s.

The pink pattern shown several times above is a print on one of the museum walls. I found it very similar to the Liberty of London print on my shoes so I continued the spring-floral theme throughout the rest of the photos.

I’m not a big fan of Wool’s work, but it is interesting, and the words do have a resonance. There’s some great conceptual art, but I have to admit it’s a school I’m not really drawn to. I guess because the emphasis is on the thought process instead of the experience. Call me decadent, but I’ve always been attracted to art that you can climb into and roll around in.
I’ve only been to the Art Institute once, but it was amazing. Totally overwhelming. I’m dying to go again, but I don’t know when I’ll get back to Chicago.
I can totally get where you’re coming from. And I agree with you that art that you’re allowed to touch is so much fun. The Art Institute is really cool, isn’t it?! If you’re headed back to Chicago, make sure it’s during the warm months. It’ll be so much more fun!
