As a grown-up traveler, it’s easy to write off a trip to a zoo as you make your way around a new country. Well–don’t be fooled and skip over The Australia Zoo. This may have been where I felt the most acute culture shock on my trip down under. Animals just hop around, out of cages, for you to pet and feed as you please. It was insanity! Oh and I got to cuddle with a koala. His name was Jeff. (pronounced Geeeeoef by the handler)
The people of Brisbane and surrounding area pay great homage to Steve Irwin. They’ve named highways after him, have his photo on billboards all over, etc. This was his Zoo after all. His kids and wife run the joint now. You can see them feed a few crocodiles while you’re there.
If you’re in Australia, don’t miss out on this opportunity. It was baffling as an American and pretty fun.
Wow! Amazing photos! We are incredibly jealous. Koala cuddles sounds like an instant life improvement. We’re hoping to get to Australia some day in the future. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful photos!
These photos are great
This certainly seems like a great place to visit, and I’ve only heard great things from those who have spent some time there. From the stories they’ve shared, it sounds like it a very warm culture and the people are friendly and welcoming. Thanks for sharing with us and happy traveling!

I also was surprised how much I liked Australia Zoo – I’m not usually a fan of commercial zoos but this one is very well done indeed. I also recommed Healesville Zoo near Melbourne for anyone who wants to see lots of Australian animals. (Kangaroos and koalas are great, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg.)
Great tip! Thank you so much. Melbourne is an amazing cities. One of my favorites.
