New Zealand is a tremendously beautiful land. Its hills are jagged and grassy and covered in sheep. Driving the countryside, rain or shine, is breathtaking–so breathtaking, it doesn’t feel real. Everywhere you look, you feel as though you’re in the middle of a Lord of The Rings scene.
Below is where they filmed the Gates of Mordor. Pretty moody, huh? This is the same mountain from the other side. The weather changes drastically, and the sheep are always curious.
The following are snapshots I took from our moving car.
The roads are dangerous, two lane highways. I’ve found in my drives around the world, the riskier the roads, the more beautiful they are. I don’t know if it’s the life-threatening thrill of it all, or just the nature of putting a highway where it appears it simply does not belong.
Can you believe this is Mount Doom? This active stratovolcano is Mount Ngaurahoe in real life–and its last eruption was back in 1974. As we approached, the weather was cheery. The closer we got, the gloomier the clouds became.
I did a little sneaker sketch inspired by LOTR. After all, aren’t we all looking for someone to share in an adventure?
But the question is I guess…shall we pass?!
These are gorgeous photos! Thanks so much for taking us into your adventure! 🙂
What a gorgeous bunch of photos!!! I can even see something resembling the Dead Marshes near the bottom of the Mount Doom. Goodness, seriously gorgeous places and I am, quite frankly, officially jealous.
Very cool
I would love to visit here! It’s so beautiful!
Wonderful photos. It is interesting to think about putting roads through wilderness. On the one hand, that’s how most of us get to see these amazing places. On the other hand, that’s often the beginning of development, and the gradual degradation of these landscapes. When I was young, my family would take trips up the California coast, and much of it was beautiful open land. Now, taking the same trip, you see housing developments springing up along the highway, more and more construction every year.
Great point. I think about this kind of an argument sometimes. At least these were poke-y little roads–hardly much development.
Thanks for sharing and offering an interesting perspective!
Gorgeous country! I’d love to see in the real. Your pics are amazing!
