Franz Josef Glacier is on the South Island of New Zealand. It was a hike to get there, but one of the greatest hikes I’ve ever been on. Follow along on my adventure below.
Rock stacking is a discipline. At least, that’s what Wikipedia told me. I love finding these during my travels. It’s always nice to remember that there are rock-loving kindred spirits out there in the world.
This beautiful chunk of glacier has been in a rapid retreat since 2008. It once spread all the way to the sea, but now only remains near the peak. Happy to lay eyes on it and sad to see it melt away. They say that some glaciers in New Zealand are among the few that can regain mass during extreme snowfall. So here’s to hoping. 🤞

Sad to see that the glacier has retreated so much since I was there in 2005. Enjoy new zealand it is a great place and the kiwis are lovely too.
